Learn to Cross Country Ski

Nordic skiing, otherwise known as cross-country skiing is a form of skiing where skiers rely on their own locomotion to move across snow-covered terrain, rather than using ski lifts or other forms of assistance. Skiers can ski in preset tracks, or head out on their own in any terrain.

Cross Country Ski Gear

Basic ski gear includes a pair of skis which are defined by the weight of the skier to determine the correct size of ski. A pair of ski boots that connect to the skis with a binding mechanism and a pair of poles to help propel the skier along.

The most common skis for beginners are called waxless skis as the skier can head out and just ski without having to know anything about wax or worry about snow temperatures.

Of course, proper outer wear will allow the skier to enjoy the ski without getting cold. Pants specifically designed for cross country skiing allow more movement for the lower body by adding hinge points at the knee much like running tights. A ski jacket that allows the arms to move freely is also a good idea.

Keep in mind to dress in layers to keep the body warm and to wick moisture away from the core.

Classic cross country ski doesn’t have to be complicated, as long as you can move your body much like you do for a long stride walk, you will be able to ski.

With time, you can take lessons to improve your technique and be able to ski longer with less effort.
